Ashley HIGHER Harris lives a holy existence in the hills above Montego Bay. He does not cut his hair, eat anything that has been killed or drink anything but spring water. Higher greets the audience in the opening scene of ROCKERS, and he heals Horsemouth after the beating by Marshall’s thugs. During filming, Higher’s herbal preparation actually did heal the movie’s sound man of a severe skin allergy.
Lawrence JACK RUBY Lindo, seen producing Kiddus-I’s “Graduation in Zion” and later on operating the out door club where Hosemouth loses his motorcycle, was the leading producer of reggae music from Ocho Rios including Burning Spear and Justin Hines.
He died in April 1989.
Frank KIDDUS-I Dowding, seen performing “Graduation in Zion” in Harry J’s studio in an early scene in ROCKERS, has been writing poetry and essays as well as music for many years. Kiddus was one of the prime movers behind a loosely-structured artists’ collective for writers, craftsman, actors, dancers and musicians in the mid 1970’s. His first hit, a disco 45 entitled “Security” was instrumental in cooling tensions between warring ghetto gang in 1978.
Robert ROBBIE Shakespeare, who toured regularly with Peter Tosh, is the best know bass-player in the reggae world. His distinctive bass sound is heard on almost every cut on the island and in ROCKERS. Robbie is best known for his collaboration with drummer Sly Dunbar. Sly & Robbie have provided the rhythm section for records by James Brown, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon and many others. He appears in the film as a mechanic who helps prepare transportation for the final raid.
